The Run For Red Cyclists Reach Santa Monica in Support of the Red Cross

On September 26th, 2010, a group of athletes that included Miss Canada 2009, Shannon Lynn; Brock Kreitzburg of the U.S. Olympic Bobsled Team; and Bill Schuffenhauer and Christina Smith of the Canadian Olympic Bobsled Team;  left Calgary, Canada on bicycles with a goal to reach the beaches of Southern California by November. The marathon bicycle ride (4000 km) was in support of the American and Canadian Red Cross. On November 4, the cyclists reached the beach in Santa Monica, where they were met by the welcoming arms of the Santa Monica Chapter of the Red Cross.  My Teen Topix was there to cover the event, as the athletes joyfully dipped the bikes into the warm Pacific Ocean.  Along the way twenty celebrity riders joined the fab four, but it was the effort of Shannon Lynn and her Olympic friends that the crowd came to see.

A trip of 4000 km seems like a healthy workout for most of us couch potatoes, but it should be recognized that to undertake such a strenuous journey, the team had to take long training trips of about 6000 km before even starting the Canada-U.S. trip. The total distance traveled by all the riders was a whopping 22,000 km including the ride and the training, Thats 13670.14 miles split between the four main participants.

The riders were a delight to meet in person, they joked around without ever losing the seriousness of their mission for the Red Cross.  At one point, Miss Canada, Shannon Lynn crowned Olympian Christina Smith with her beauty pageant crown. Everyone at the event has a terrific time, and left with an incredible appreciation for the charm and dedication of the four who rode for Red.

It is not too late to contribute to The Ride For Red cause.  Simply click on the following link to find out how you can honor this effort and the important cause at its core:
